Weegee is an enigma. His photographs fall into two distinct categories. On the one hand, there are his documentary images of events taken in New York in the 1940s. And on the other, photographs of starlets and politicians taken in Hollywood in the following decade. There are two Weegees, one tragic and one festive, which this book aims to reconcile by showing the coherence of a body of work based on a radical and incisive critique of the Society of the Spectacle.
