The coronation of King
George VI on May 12,
1937 in London was one
of the most publicized event
of the interwar period.
While most of the reporters
present tried to photograph
the moment of the coronation,
Henri Cartier-Bresson
preferred to photograph
the people watching the new
monarch pass. Of the
solemnities of the day,
he only remember the spectacle
of the crowd of onlookers
massed on the path of the
procession. By turning his
gaze in this way, Henri
Cartier-Bresson imagines
the overthrow of power.
